This is a council-owned property and country park located to the north-east of Nottingham city centre. Famous for featuring as the exterior of Batman's home in The Dark Knight Rises, Wollaton Hall is both a country house and a Natural History museum. There are several rooms presented in period decor, and several other rooms of animal exhibits (including a gorilla and giraffe). Disabled visitors must use the back entrance, so it may be worth grabbing someone and asking them to send a member of staff out to you as the front entrance has steps, but we found the staff were quite helpful and accommodating. There is a ramp at the back, plus a lift has been installed between the basement (where the toilets are located - including an accessibble one), and the ground and first floor. All rooms are accessible, apart from the top floor's park viewing room - which is only open to visitors on the tour anyway. There is a fee for the tour should you wish to take it, otherwise you are free to walk around yourself. Activity sheets are available for children. The gift shop is located within the main building, and there is also a stable yard featuring another gift shop and set of toilets, plus a cafe - both of which are accesible. There is also an Industrial Museum located here, though this is only open on certain days and unfortunately wasn't open on the day we visited. The coutry park is a good size, though some of the paths are shared with cars. Mostly the land is grass, so best to visit after a spell of dry weather should you not want to stick to the paths. Car parking is reasonably cheap (£2 for three hours), but you can park for free with a blue badge - limited disabled parking is available right outside the hall, and they recommend you book. The main carpark is not too far away, but does involve a short, steep walk up to the main house, and the surface of the car park is uneven in places. There is no entrance fee for the main building, but there is for the tour.

Wollaton Hall and Deer Park

A lift! A lift set inside a country house - to three floors! Visiting Wollaton has genuinely changed my opinions and beliefs in terms of what should be possible - accessibility-wise - in stately homes. Although it is not an enormous house, nevertheless it is pretty enough, plus it provides the opportunity to explore more of Nottingham as it is only a short car journey from the city centre (approximately 10 minutes).

My only niggles are small - there appears to be a lift at the front (presumably for disabled users as it looked similar to stair lifts I have seen before), but this does not work which is a shame - I suspect it has not worked for some time as it is not listed on the web site as an accessible route in. For this reason it gets four stars for accessibility. The terrain is mostly flat has a small slope but this is quite steep if you're in a manual chair. Nothing anyone can do about the geography though, so I list it for information purposes rather than as a criticism.

All-in-all a pleasant visit, probably 2-3 hours worth of activity, highly recommended and best of all - free!
